E-38 Error on the ES700 Time Recorder Follow
The E-38 error on the ES700 indicates that the print head motor or sensor is not operating properly. This error may occur if the ribbon is jammed or if dust and debris interfere with the print mechanism. This article walks you through troubleshooting and resolving the E-38 error.
Solution 1: Remove the Ribbon and Press the Push Bar
To resolve an E-38 error, begin by removing the ribbon from the time recorder and pressing the push bar with the ribbon removed using the following steps:
- Unlock the unit and remove the cover. For more details, refer to our Getting Started article for how to Open Unit.
-
Hold the ribbon cassette by its tab and pull the ribbon cassette straight out to remove it.
- With the ribbon removed, press the push bar once.
- Before reinstalling the ribbon cassette, turn the knob on the top of the cassette to verify that the ribbon advances freely.
-
Install the ribbon cassette inside the unit so that the ribbon is between the print head and the ribbon mask. Printing will not function properly if the ribbon is placed behind the ribbon mask.
-
Push the ribbon cassette until it snaps into position. Turning the knob on the ribbon cassette may make installation easier.
- Turn the knob of the ribbon cassette in the direction of the arrow (clockwise) to tighten the ribbon.
- Insert a time card and attempt a print. If the E-38 error no longer appears, the issue is resolved.
Solution 2: Press the White Feet toward the Back of the Clock
If the error persists, locate the two white feet on the bottom interior of the recorder. Press both feet toward the back of the clock. This should activate the print mechanism. Afterward, insert a time card and attempt a print.
Solution 3: Reset the Clock
If neither solution resolves the issue, reset the device using the reset button.
⚠️Important: Resetting the clock restores factory default settings and removes any custom configuration. You will need to re-program your time and date settings.
